Easily ranks among the best from the Disney Studio, and a very worthy successor to Mulan 1998, a similar story equally well done.
Oddly also seems to be best work ever from Dwayne Johnson, perhaps not the first name I would have associated with "voice acting," but a star turn nonetheless.
If you want to be picky -- which is the reviewer's job, after all -- the momentum slows a little at the top of the third act, but the ultimate themes of redemption, forgiveness and self-discovery at the finale are an absolute joy.
As they used to say, "for children of all ages."

Another wonderful movie to add to the Disney classics. 2016 has been aparticularly strong year for animated films. With the likes ofZootopia, Finding Dory and Kubo & The Two Strings all vying for bestanimated picture of the year, it seems Moana deserves to be mentionedin the same breath as well. It is awesome movie.
A small pounamu stone that is the mystical heart of the goddess Te Fitiis stolen by the demigod Maui, who was planning to give it to humanityas a gift. As Maui makes his escape, he is attacked by the lava demonTe Kā, causing the heart of Te Fiti as well as his power-grantingmagical fish hook to be lost in the ocean.
Young Moana Waialiki, daughter and heir of the chief on the smallPolynesian island of Motunui, is chosen by the ocean to receive theheart, but drops it when her father, Chief Tui, comes to get her. Heinsists the island provides everything the villagers need. Years later, fish become scarce and the island's vegetation begins dying. Moanaproposes going beyond the reef to find more fish. Chief Tui rejects herrequest, as sailing past the reef is forbidden.
Moana's grandmother, Gramma Tala, shows Moana a secret cave behind awaterfall, where she discovers her ancestors were voyagers, sailing anddiscovering new islands across the world. Tala explains that theystopped voyaging because Maui stole the heart, causing monsters toappear in the ocean. Tala then reveals that the darkness has beenspreading from island to island, slowly killing, and now Motunui isnext.
Tala falls ill and with her dying breaths tells Moana to set sail.Moana and her pet chicken Heihei depart in a drua to find Maui torestore the heart of the goddess Te Fiti.
After a typhoon wave flips her sailboat and knocks her unconscious, sheawakens the next morning on an island inhabited by Maui, who traps herin a cave and takes her sailboat to search for his fishhook. Immediately after, sentient coconut pirates called Kakamora surroundthe boat and steal the heart, but Maui and Moana retrieve it. Mauiagrees to help return the heart to Te Fiti, but only after he reclaimshis hook, which is hidden in Lalotai, the Realm of Monsters, and heldby Tamatoa, a giant coconut crab. They successfully retrieve it bytricking Tamatoa. After Maui have his hook, Fearful that returning tofight Te Kā will destroy his hook, Maui abandons Moana.
Moana still want to return the heart from the ocean to Te Fiti alone.Maui, having had a change of heart, returns to help Moana. Mauidistract the lava demon, and his hook is destroyed in the battle.Realizing that Te Kā is actually Te Fiti without her heart, Moana asksthe ocean to clear a path for Te Kā to approach her. She sings a song, asking Te Kā to remember who she truly is, allowing Moana to restoreher heart. Te Fiti returns and in gratitude, gives a new canoe to Moanaand a new magical hook to Maui before returning to her island form.
Moana bids farewell to Maui and returns to her recovering island withHeihei. Later, the villagers begin voyaging and set sail in search ofnew islands, as Maui and Tala accompany them in their giant hawk andmanta ray forms, respectively.
2016 has been a particularly strong year for animated films. With thelikes of Zootopia, Finding Dory and Kubo & The Two Strings all vyingfor best animated picture of the year, it seems Moana deserves to bementioned in the same breath as well. It's no fluke that out of thefour movies I just mentioned, 3 of them belong under the house of themouse.
Legend has it that demigod Maui stole a sacred stone, the heart of thegoddess Te Fiti. The lava demon confronted him and both the heart andMaui were lost forever. Now, the world is slowly dying and someone mustfind the heart and force Maui to put it back. But who is this chosenone? It might be Moana, a Polynesian girl who is suppose to be takingover as chief of her tribe, but longs to sail beyond the reef.Featuring new comer Auli'i Carvalho as Moana and the most electrifyingman in sports entertainment, Dwayne 'The Rock" Johnson, as the demigodMaui.
It's not surprising that I found myself tapping my feet to the songs inthis film because Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of Hamilton, shares histalent with this film. I can easily see any one of the songs in thispiece going up for and winning Best Original Song, giving the man the Oin the prestigious PEGOT award circle. He currently has a Pulitzer,Emmy, Tony and Grammy, among more. The songs here remind me of theold-school Disney songs, easy to listen to, fun to play on repeat andimportant to the story. At first, I felt it was a little too on thenose with some of the lyrics, but eventually he won me over and I'vebeen listening to the soundtrack ever since.
The film itself might lack some of the intricacies of plot heavy filmslike Zootopia, but this journey story is entertaining and heartfelt. The vibrant colours of the green islands and the blue sea help propelthe film above and beyond what some others films have to offer. Theanimation takes a nice little turn for the creative when the charactersfind themselves under the sea in a side villains lair. We are treatedwith some bioluminescent sequences with another catchy tune not farbehind.
Johnson is stellar as Maui, he seems completely comfortable in a voiceacting role and surprisingly has the chops to sing a tune. NewcomerAuli'i Carvalho holds her own against a star like Johnson and shereally gives a strong voice to a driven female character. I applaudthat Disney didn't feel the need to shoehorn in a love story either. This is a tale about self discovery, not some young woman needing tofind a man. Disney nods and respects their past while looking to thefuture with Moana. Princesses no longer need to be the 'love' goal of aman.
Moana is a visually beautiful film with great songs and a strong femalelead character. There are some visually gags for the kids and a greattime for adults. Moana is a great film.
